Jeep Compass

Jeep Compass

As the originator of the SUV concept, Jeep is often the leader when it comes to new SUV ideas and designs. The 2010 Jeep Compass, as a crossover vehicle that is meant to be just as much at home in urban or suburban traffic as it is on dirt roads and mountain paths, is indeed a new twist on the usual SUV concept and design. Since it is a Jeep, the Jeep Compass retains far more of its utility vehicle heritage than other crossovers do. This does make the Jeep Compass a leader among crossovers, and indeed it focuses on its practical utility side more than it does on the comfort that is found in other crossovers that emphasize the family station wagon side of their blended identities.

The exterior of the 2010 Jeep Compass clearly shouts "Jeep!" It presents a rugged look, which, while rendered a bit "friendlier" and curvier than that of straight utility Jeeps, is still clearly aimed at those who seek practicality when they choose a vehicle for daily use. The engine is also practical; it is a respectable but far-from-overwhelming 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 158 horsepower. Even the more powerful optional engine, a 2.4-liter power plant that delivers 172 horsepower, is noted for its fuel economy. Neither of these engines gives spectacular performance, but the Compass handles exceptionally well, making it a perfect choice for highway driving.

Safety is also a major emphasis of the 2010 Jeep Compass, which includes a full complement of safety features such as side curtain airbags along with front-seat airbags and active head restraints, anti-lock brakes, brake traction control, "Brake Assist" and a stability feature that can be controlled by the driver. The vehicle has earned a five-star rating from the Federal government safety watchdog for side-impact crash protection.

The 2010 Jeep Compass is considered an economy vehicle, and as such its standard features list is respectable. Four different trim packages are available, two of which are more basic and the other two of which include a five-speed transmission as well as a host of other features that enhance the comfort and convenience of the Compass for driver and passengers alike. All trim packages are available with either the standard front-wheel drive option or with a four-wheel drive option that is recommended for harsher climates.

Jeep is known to stress practicality over other considerations, and the Jeep Compass for 2010 is no exception to the usual Jeep philosophy. It is indeed a leader in that it clearly favors the rugged side of the crossover concept rather than the comfort or style side. Nevertheless, it does provide a decent level of comfort, especially with the seats that accompany the two more advanced trim packages. It also presents a style that, while not sleek or glitzy, does stand out among other vehicles of its type.

The 2010 Jeep Compass is intended more for the fishing dad than for the soccer mom, but it still can serve as a practical and convenient day-to-day family vehicle.

The second-generation of Jeep Compass debuted on September 27, 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, replacing the Jeep Patriot and first generation Compass. Production for North American-market Compass models was moved to Toluca, Mexico, while Jeep Cherokee (KL) production will move from Toledo, Ohio to Belvidere, Illinois, where the first-generation Compass and Jeep Patriot were both assembled.

Using a stretched version of the same platform as the Renegade, the Compass is available in four distinct trim levels: the base Sport, the mid-level Latitude, the luxurious Limited, and the off road-capable Trailhawk. All trim levels are available with either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, with the exception of the Trailhawk, which is only available in a 4WD configuration.

In the United States, the Compass comes equipped with a 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder engine or a 1.4L MultiAir four-cylinder engine. More than 65 percent of the upper body structure and frame is made of high-strength steel.

Styling of the second-generation Compass is inspired by two of its larger siblings, the Jeep Cherokee (KL) and Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2). Styling elements taken from the Grand Cherokee include headlamps integrated into the front grille and a narrow front grille with a black finish, while the Cherokee lends some of its rear end styling elements, basic interior design, and 2.4L Tigershark inline four-cylinder (I4) gasoline engine and ZF-sourced nine-speed 948TE automatic transmission to the overall design of the Compass.

Available features include FCA's UConnect 4C 8.4 and 8.4N touch-screen infotainment systems, a Beats Premium Audio System with a 506-watt digital amplifier, eighteen-inch aluminum alloy wheels, Jeep's Command-View panoramic sunroof, LED front headlamps, Forward Collision Warning, a ParkView rear-view backup camera system, front and rear parking sensors, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and Jeep's Selec-Terrain full-time four-wheel-drive system (standard on the Trailhawk model).
